The
Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) of the United States Department
of Agriculture (USDA) granted Cooperative Extension Agreements
for Nutrition Education Networks to five states in the Mountain
Plains Region—Colorado, Iowa, Kansas (in 1996), Missouri
and South Dakota. The purpose of these agreements was to create
public and private partnerships to form self-sustaining statewide
networks which provide nutrition education consistent with
USDA FNS guidance including: emphasis on the Dietary Guidelines,
reliance on integrated community-based efforts, state flexibility,
and use of innovative social marketing. The networks use a
combination of state, private, and federal funds to support
a nutrition promotion effort that involves the traditional
nutrition education partners as well as innovative community
organizations. |
