Welcome to our first Kansas Nutrition Network email newsletter! Special thanks to Joan Phillips and Samantha Sieben of HG Design Factory for assistance in setting this up. See www.hgdesign.com They put us in touch with Jeremy Doughty, a volunteer who has done the actual work to get this newsletter going. Thank you, Jeremy.
The Kansas Public Health Association (KPHA) annual meeting is September 23-25 in Overland Park. For more information, contact KPHA at sfinney@networksplus.net
Hearts N' Parks incorporates science-based information about lifestyle choices that can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and skills for adopting heart-healthy behaviors into regular activities offered by park and recreation departments and other community-based agencies. The program focuses on encouraging Americans of all ages to aim for a healthy weight, follow a heart-healthy eating plan, and engage in regular physical activity. Log on to www.nrpa.org for more info.
Related to Hearts N’ Parks is an audio conference on September 18 that KNN will connect to during our meeting. The Avera Lifestyle Challenge is a successful community weight loss and exercise initiative. See www.communityhlth.org/education/audio.html
How does Chocolate Bread Pudding sound? Or an oven-baked casserole of sandwiches covered with a milk and egg mixture, then baked? How about Corn Chowder made with canned cream of mushroom or potato soup, creamed corn and corn kernels? These are just a few of the recipes included in two brochures produced by the University of Connecticut. Food pantries often provide canned soups and vegetables, and breads so these booklets were designed with that in mind. www.canr.uconn.edu/nusci/outrch/EFNEP.html
(See Simply Soups and Cooking with Bread.)
Note: recipes require Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have Reader installed you may download it by clicking here.
Is it a surprise that when cold weather hits, low income people might choose to pay their heating bills and spend less money on food? Check out www.ajph.org/cgi/content/abstract/93/7/1149
I think our 5 minutes is just about up. Send an email to Karen Fitzgerald kfitzger@ksu.edu if you have information you to include in next month’s KNN email newsletter.
