Household Food Security in the United States, 2004. Eighty-eight percent of American households were food secure throughout the entire year in 2004, meaning that they had access, at all times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members. The remaining households were food insecure at least some time during that year. The prevalence of food insecurity rose from 11.2 percent of households in 2003 to 11.9 percent in 2004 and the prevalence of food insecurity with hunger rose from 3.5 percent to 3.9 percent.

Connecting residents to vital health and social services are the promotoras. Most promotoras are residents of the colonias themselves, so they enjoy the trust of their neighbors. These “health angels” are trained and certified through a program funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Health Connections: Linking Research to Practice, is a quarterly newsletter that summarizes a topic of current interest for health professionals. This issue is titled “The Down-aging of Chronic Disease: Importance of Early Lifestyle Habits”. Two Nutrition Organizations Partner to Launch Anti-Obesity Initiative for Minority Children. The American Council for Fitness and Nutrition (ACFN) and the American Dietetic Association Foundation (ADAF) last week announced a joint effort to curb high obesity rates among African-American and Hispanic children by developing culturally relevant programs to help minority families adopt healthier lifestyles. “Cultural relevance is a critical new frontier in the battle against obesity" and the program will work to instill lifelong healthy habits in underserved minority children "who need [help] most" American Council for Fitness and Nutrition release, October 2005).
HHS Releases New Book to 'Foster Health Literacy,' Promote Healthy Lifestyles
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a nutrition and exercise book aimed at "foster[ing] health literacy" to help Americans integrate the latest federal dietary guidelines into their everyday lives, the Washington Post reports.
Health Officials Working to Attract Grocery Stores to Low-Income Neighborhoods
Health advocates and government officials in several states are working to increase the number of supermarkets in low-income communities in an effort to improve residents' access to healthy foods, USA Today reports.
