Quick Quiz. What is one of the most successful social marketing campaigns? Did you say Smokey the Bear? 95% of U.S. adults can identify the fictional character that 60 years ago first promoted the slogan "Only YOU can prevent forest fires!" Now Smokey says, "Only YOU can prevent wildfires!" Smokey has no middle name – no "the." People started including a middle name after a popular 1952 folk song aired with a rhythmic "Smokey the Bear, Smokey the Bear. Prowlin' and a growlin' and a sniffin' the air." (Editorial note: How many of you can sing the whole song? I’ll bet a bunch of us can!!)
Living on the Edge, a report on the state of low-income working Kansas families, was produced by KACAP and is available on their website, www.kacap.org, and also on the KNN website under Hot Topics www.kansasnutritionnetwork.org
By spreading the word about healthy eating and the availability of the Kansas Food Assistance Program and how to access it, you will help people of all ages who need financial and nutrition support. www.oznet.ksu.edu/humannutrition/foodassistflyers.htm
Obesity and hunger are not mutually exclusive. Poor people may have less access to healthy food because they often lack transportation, particularly in inner city and rural areas. Consequently they rely on the corner convenient store or small market as their supermarket, where prices are higher and fewer healthy foods are available. http://www.commercialappeal.com/mca/healthy_memphis/article/0,1426,MCA_19196_3211769,00.html

In American Dream, a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Jason DeParle tracks one family for seven years, literally following the story from the White House to the local crack house. This is believed to be a country where anyone can make it, yet as DeParle illustrates with Angie, Jewell and Opal, some families succeed and some don’t.

Go to http://www.bagpipesatbest.com/ to hear some bagpipe tunes. They don’t sound like “bagpipes” – more electronic, but fun anyway.
