How much do Americans pay for fruits and vegetables? This analysis uses data on 1999 household food purchases to estimate an annual retail price per pound and per serving for 69 forms of fruits and 85 forms of vegetables. Among the forms priced, more than half were estimated to cost 25 cents or less per serving. Consumers can meet the recommendation of three servings of fruits and four servings of vegetables daily for 64 cents. http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/aib790/
(Note: These prices may seem too low, but the authors contend that these prices were based on national averages and the cost of the edible portions of fruits and vegetables in 1999. However, people don’t buy ½ cup serving sizes. They buy and consume 1 banana or 1 apple, not 2/3 of an apple because it might be slightly bigger than “one serving size.” Some fresh fruits and vegetables are cheaper in season than canned or frozen, but consumers need to compare the cost per serving.)

With gas prices averaging $1.89 per gallon nationally, low-income workers are particularly feeling the effect. Poor workers often live farther from jobs due to the location of affordable housing, have little access to public transit, and drive older, less fuel-efficient cars. http://www.motorway.com/Stories/0,1413,243~25474~2268064,00.html
