Volunteers were asked to estimate the age of models while wearing nose-masks infused with various aromas. "In the presence of the smell of pink grapefruit, women appear to be six years younger than their real age," says study author Alan B. Hirsch of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation.

A report issued by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and published in the July issue of Pediatrics says that although many pediatricians and family physician groups endorse the use of body mass index in routine screenings for obesity and overweight, pediatricians need to consider other factors when diagnosing and treating obesity.

FNS is pleased to inform you of a new resource document, The CDC Guide to Breastfeeding Interventions, developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity. The document can be accessed on the Internet at www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has issued the first set of reports in a new series examining research on the effects of public benefit programs that assist low-income families and individuals. These reports highlight the accomplishments of these programs and discuss ways in which they can be improved. The reports cover food and nutrition programs, Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), the Supplemental Security Income Program for the elderly and disabled poor, the Earned Income Tax Credit, and examines the combined impact of the nation’s system of public benefit programs on poverty and health insurance coverage.
