| As obesity has come to the forefront of public health concerns, there is growing interest in finding ways to guide consumers’ food choices to be more beneficial for their long-term health. About one in five Americans participates in at least one nutrition assistance program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This study uses behavioral economics, food marketing, and psychology to identify possible options for improving the diets and health of participants in the Food Stamp Program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), and the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. http://www.ers.usda.gov/Publications/ERR43/ |

This Economic Information Bulletin describes characteristics of low-income households that had very low food security in 2005. The U.S. Department of Agriculture monitors the food security of low-income households to assess how effectively the Government's domestic nutrition assistance programs meet the needs of their target populations. USDA seeks to reduce the prevalence of very low food security among low-income households as part of its strategic plan under the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA). The report can be downloaded from:http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/eib25/ |
| The WIC Program Briefing
Room provides a central point for obtaining information about
research, publications, and data related to WIC (Special Supplemental
Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children). As the third largest
USDA domestic food and nutrition assistance program, WIC serves over 8
million participants per month and costs exceeded $5 billion in fiscal
2006. http://www.ers.usda.gov/Briefing/WIC/
