Even the most determined dieters may find their willpower tested while waiting in checkout aisles crowded with candy and high-calorie snacks. Self-checkout lanes generally have fewer arm's-reach snacks -- limiting temptation while saving time (lines average 66% shorter). There's also the self-conscious factor: Ringing up their own purchases may make shoppers more mindful of their choices. Depending on how frequently you fall victim to last-minute purchases, your calorie savings could possibly prevent you from gaining several pounds a year!
