Researchers: Low-income families can't afford to follow USDA dietary guidelines.
New Hampshire Public Radio, August 6, 2007. The 7-day sample meal plan menu that comes with the food guide pyramid is not feasible for many low-income families, according to Joanna Burke, a nutritionist and professor at the University of New Hampshire. "Our data shows that it costs close to $8 a day to eat according to this menu and yet the food stamp average allotment for an individual is about $2.75 a day to eat," said Burke.

Study Finds Preschoolers Vulnerable to Fast-Food Advertising
A study in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine finds that most preschoolers prefer the taste of food packaged in McDonald's wrappers over identical food in plain wrapping, suggesting that children are significantly influenced by fast-food marketing.

And its not just McDs, it’s the power of brand logos on kids in general. Check out the "picking game" videos at this link: www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14409105/

The RWJF-Supported Study Suggests Five Services Would Save More than 100,000 Lives Annually
A new report by the Partnership for Prevention found deficiencies in preventive care for the nation as a whole. The report, Preventive Care: A National Profile on Use, Disparities, and Health Benefits, found that a few measures—such as more adults getting flu shots and being screened for cancer—could save tens of thousands of lives each year in the United States. The study was funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and WellPoint Foundation. Read the news release. Download full text of the report. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and American Heart Association (AHA) have released updated physical activity recommendations for adults and older adults. ACSM and AHA have jointly published the papers in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise and Circulation. You can read the manuscripts online and view related information about the guidelines here. You can also read the news release.
Specifically, the guidelines recommend all healthy adults aged 18 to 65 years need moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity for a minimum of 30 minutes on five days each week or vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity for a minimum of 20 minutes on three days each week. A separate companion paper is published for the older adult audience.
