| The mission of KNN is to develop and expand
partnerships which (1) provide nutrition and physical activity
education, and (2) improve access to nutrition resources and nutrition
and physical activity programs to improve the health of low income
Kansans. KNN’s partner agencies serve many populations, including
the elderly, working poor, children and families.
KNN’s immediate target audience is agencies. A needs assessment was conducted with partner agencies in 2002, and the results of that assessment has been used in planning meetings and choosing content for the email newsletter. The KNN Steering Committee has suggested meeting topics for FY 2006 beginning in the fall 2005.
The need for nutrition education and improved access to nutrition resources is great. The most recent Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Surveys indicate that:
- Less than 30% of low income Kansans consume five fruits and
vegetables per day;
- Almost 60% of low income Kansans are overweight or obese; and
- Less than 80% of low income Kansans report engaging in physical activity at least once a month.
Formative research is conducted with every project KNN coordinates, and may include focus groups and surveys. Demographic data is used, and may include an analysis of schools that have more than 50% of children enrolled as free and reduced price; poverty data in counties; food security/hunger data; food stamp participation rates; and other relevant data.
We continue to hear that time and money are barriers to healthy eating among the low income population. Participants want quick and easy tips for meal preparation and healthy snacking ideas. KNN continues to focus on increased fruit and vegetable consumption, childhood overweight prevention programs, and quick and easy snack ideas.
