Upcoming KNN Meetings and Other Important Dates!!!

September 12, 2008 at Prairie Land Foods in Topeka

As many of you know, I'll be retiring on September 30, 2008 - after
9½ years as the KNN Coordinator. Barb Roths has taken another
position within Extension as the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent
in Butler County. She has been with KNN for 9 years and we miss her!
Please save September 12 for my last KNN meeting. It will be in
Topeka at Prairie Land Foods. More information will be forthcoming.

Experience Works is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping
seniors with low income get the training that they need to find good
jobs in their local communities. The Prime Time Awards Program seeks
to raise awareness of the contributions made by older workers and to
break down barriers associated with the hiring, training, and
retention of all seniors who want or need work.

"Eating Well as You Get Older" is the latest topic to be added to
NIHSeniorHealth, the health and wellness Web site developed by the
National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Library of
Medicine (NLM), both part of the National Institutes of Health.

Hunger Champions: June 30th is the deadline to nominate local food
stamp agencies and food retailers for their service to food stamp

Designed for Disease: The Link Between Local Food Environments and
Obesity and Diabetes examines the relationship between the food
available near where one lives and the likelihood of being obese or
having diabetes. People who live near an abundance of fast-food
restaurants and convenience stores compared to grocery stores and
produce vendors have a significantly higher prevalence of obesity
and diabetes regardless of individual or community income.

World market prices for major food commodities such as grains and
vegetable oils have risen sharply to historic highs of more than 60
percent above levels just 2 years ago. See

gas prices continue to rise, public officials worry about the
effects on welfare reform. The Dispatch examines how low-income
workers, feeling the strains of transportation and food expenses,
are finding that gas cards and vouchers are not enough to offset the
rapidly increasing costs, leading some to wonder if they can still
afford to work.

Rising Food Prices Contributing to Obesity Among Low-Income
Americans
, Experts Say As food prices continue to increase, pushing
healthy options out of reach for many low-income families, experts
caution that rates of obesity and related diseases are likely to
climb further, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

California School Milk Supplier Cuts Corn Syrup from Flavored Milk
Southern California schools will soon begin serving flavored milk that is free of high-fructose corn syrup, an ingredient many nutritionists say contributes to childhood obesity, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reports.

Vermont Aims to Increase Enrollment in Federal Child Nutrition Program Hoping to increase access to nutritious food among underserved children in Vermont, the state and the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger are stepping up recruitment for the national Child and Adult Care Food Program, the Barre Montpelier Times Argus reports.

One year has passed since the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
announced it would commit at least $500 million to help reverse the
childhood obesity epidemic by 2015. Consider this "anniversary"
announcement a renewed and even louder call to come together in
